This unit has been repaired. The notorious gear has been replaced, sled has been cleaned and lubricated. The laser pick up unit was also replaced with one that I pulled from a Sony discman. Copied (burned) CDs are typically hard to read, so seeing that it can read them without a problem is a really good sign.
